BRICS DESIGNER COLLECTIONS

As the year 2018 completes the first decade of the BRICS Summit, the South African Government through the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) will host ‘The BRICS Designer Collections’ and Fashion Business Forum from 24 - 26 October 2018 in Johannesburg, Gauteng, during the South African Fashion Week (SAFW)Autumn Winter 2019 Collections.  These collections form part of the 10^th BRICS Summit recently hosted under the theme, ‘’Collaboration for Inclusive Growth and Shared Prosperity in the 4th Industrial Revolution”.

 

Hosted in partnership with the South African Fashion Week, ‘The BRICS Designer Collections’ and the Fashion Business Forum are aimed at showcasing textile and retail opportunities within BRICS countries; creating a platform for fashion designers to participate in each other’s premier fashion shows, discussing and collaborating on fashion-related issues, as well as creating market access and consumption of fashion among BRICS countries.  

 

“The BRICS Designer Collections is in line with the department’s commitment to building sustainable business-to-business collaborations among the fashion designers of the BRICS countries as a means to access markets across the fashion industry”, stated Minister Nathi Mthethwa.

 

This will be taking place during the South African Fashion Week (SAFW). There will be 2 designers representing each of the BRICS countries.  A total of 10 designers will showcase some of the most exciting local and international designs on the 24th and 25th October 2018. This will be followed by the Fashion Business Forum on the 26^th of October 2018 at Lesedi Cultural Village, Johannesburg. Fashion and textile designers, agents and distributors and representatives from across the fashion industry will join in a conversation in which opportunities for ‘Collaboration’, ‘Growth’ and ‘Shared Prosperity’ as per the theme for the 10th BRICS Summit will be addressed.

 

Since South Africa has assumed BRICS rotational Chairpersonship for 2018, succeeding the People’s Republic of China, the Department of Arts and Culture has also successfully hosted the 3rd BRICS Film Festival to date.

 

“The chairmanship of BRICS Summit 2018 presents an opportunity for the country to leave a legacy associated with hosting the event of this magnitude. As the BRICS Chair, South Africa intends to build on the legacy of 2013 and to continue working towards strengthening relations between BRICS and the African continent on the Arts and Culture category, “concluded Minister Mthethwa.
