Fashion By The Sea 2012

Interview with Sim Shabalala of Lifestyle Oasis/Black Inc Events on FASHION BY THE SEA: 21st May-1st June 2012

Fashion By The Sea is one of the biggest fashion events in SA staged by Lifestyle Oasis, showcasing designs by local designers and well known designers such as Zama of Zarth, DAVID Tlale, Gavin Raja and many more. I attended this event and YES, I can proudly say that what you call CAMERA, LIGHTS, FASHION! Stunning! Read what Sim Shabalala had to say.

1. Fashion by the sea, when was it founded and how long has it been running for?
It was conceptualised a few  years back but started in 2011

2. What the inspiration to host this event?
Durban’s Iconic landmarks and the need to celebrate local creativity

3. Why at the pier?
How more iconic a location could you find? Something that would set this apart from all other fashion shows, and make it a fashion experience

4. What your vision/mission of fashion by the sea?
Support and nurture local talent whilst growing the event into an all-encompassing lifestyle event that links all creative industries together, in the form of an annual festival, and proclaiming Durban and KZN as the home of African Creativity

5. Is there a specific target market Fashion by the sea wishes to target?
Not specifically, as we feel that we talk to a very wide demographic….

6. How do designers get to participate? Is there a specific criteria?
Historically we have invited designers based on the following: Originally KZN/ Durban born or trained, local potential/ up and coming talent that may not have had the platform to showcase nationally, Nationally relevant designers that will elevate the event and also penetrate the Local (KZN) market. However we have found a need to change this going forward, and cast our net wider, however also get the designers to contribute to the overall delivery of the event.

7. Your future plans with Fashion by the sea?
Same as answer to question 4. + to establish a KZN Creative Hub that will further the aims/ goals of this event to beyond 2 days in the year.

8. How much time did it take you putting together this event?
For us it takes +/- 3-4months, but we have now don’t it a few times

9. How are you feeling with the final product? Is it what you were hoping for or you would have wished for more? (Not that I think there are any improvements needed LOL)
The event went off well, and we are happy with the overall result thereof, however…..I am my own worst critic, and always see areas of improvement and growth, as we believe in being trend setters  or trail blazers we have to keep it fresh and relevant… so I can’t say too much, but there will huge and very unique additions in 2013 that will really take this event Global.

10. This is said to be the longest runway in South Africa, how does that makes you feel and do you think it might be one of the attraction for Fashion by the sea clientele?
Being the longest Ramp in SA is one thing, but being relevant is what I feel makes the event attractive to our clientele. Also it is important to note that our clientele in this instance is not only fashionistas but all visitors to Durban….it’s time to show them that we are up there with the best and most fabulous destinations…The Warmest place to be.

11. What more would you like to say about the event that you feel it important for the public to know.
Right now I just want to thank all those that came and experienced our event and for those that did not….watch this space as we only going to make this SA FASHIONS BIG NIGHT OUT… second to none, so in future, this will become the golden ticket to have within the local and national fashion/ creative scene in SA

12. Any credit and sponsors you would like to be mentioned on the article?
