Claire Mawisa: “It is understood that when you get older, those who are younger will take care of you – that’s the natural order of things. But we meet four senior citizens who have rejected that script and have decided to make giving their way of life. To you and me, it’s just the festive season that is known as the season of giving – but these individuals have been living this way for decades. They have inspired me to reconsider how I view the world and to stop being so introspective. They give so much from the very little that they have.”
CELEBRATORY > FESTIVE
Nombulelo Yende & Timothy Moloi
We celebrate Christmas with the glorious music of adult contemporary virtuoso Timothy Moloi and young opera star Nombulelo Yende. Her voice has earned her top honours at last year’s International Competition of Belcanto Vincenzo Bellini in France. The UCT opera school postgraduate student brings classic carols to our celebratory show. Moloi, a prolific performer perhaps best known for singing “Hope” at the opening ceremony of the 2010 FIFA World Cup to 500-million viewers as well as winning a double SAMA nomination and critical acclaim for his debut album, helps us set the mood with festive, jazzy classics.

EMPOWERING > ENLIGHTENING
An Eye for Renewal
A man of rare talent and deep compassion for his community – in Carte Blanche’s search for exceptional South Africans this December we meet architect and PhD fellow Kevin Kimwelle who is re-imagining his hometown of Port Elizabeth one design idea at a time. Where some might see a landscape strewn with waste and pollution, and no resources to fix the problem, Kimwelle upcycles that same waste to make innovative and robust building materials for the construction of much-needed buildings in his neighbourhood.

Old Folks Give Back
From providing meals to hundreds of impoverished people to knitting teddy bears and beanies for children at Tygerbear Foundation – would you share your monthly pension with strangers? Well, that’s what some pensioners in the Western Cape are doing to try and spread a little love and compassion to those less fortunate. Carte Blanche discovers what motivates such generosity.

Project Flamingo
It’s one of the most terrifying diagnoses that any woman can get – breast cancer. And for women who rely on the public health sector for their oncology treatment, it could mark the beginning of a death sentence. From chemotherapy to timely mastectomy surgeries, the waiting list is long and time is against them. Now, a group of surgeons in Cape Town have put their hands up and opened their wallets to provide free surgeries at Groote Schuur and Tygerberg hospitals for these breast cancer patients.

Back by Popular Demand: RX Radio: Broadcasting for Children by Children
Ten and 12-year-olds behind a radio microphone, broadcasting live to children – and live-streaming to the world! It’s a world first for the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and a novel way for young patients and former patients to tell their own stories to peers who are still admitted to the hospital. Carte Blanche meets the award-winning young RX Radio’s broadcasters who say radio has a therapeutic effect and helps them deal with their chronic conditions, and the healthcare they undergo, sometimes for years.
