Exclusive Images - Ikhono LaseNatali Exhibition Opening

Internationally recognised photographer and visual activist Prof. Sir Zanele Muholi opened Ikhono LaseNatali exhibition on a high note at KZNSA Gallery in Durban. 

Ikhono LaseNatali curated by Dr. Bajabulile Dhlamini and Thobeka Bhengu featured artworks from 25 young visual artists from KwaZulu-Natal that Muholi commissioned to interpret Muholi's photographic series Somnyama Ngonyama. The series of photographs, Somnyama Ngonyama are self-portraits addressing race, gender, and identity. 

The exhibition was packed to capacity, making it the first exhibition ever have such big attendance to take place at KZNSA Gallery. Muholi who had just landed from London where their book Somnyama Ngonyama received the Kraszna-Krausz Book Award was praised by many for having put together such a great initiative to support KZN talented artists. 

During their speech, Muholi encouraged parents to allow their kids to follow their passion and challenged the art and culture department to support artists. "I am not the one who is supposed to be doing this (Ikhono LaseNatali) but the KZN/national art and culture is supposed to be doing it, they need to start taking artists serious, they need to support artists who hardly hardly get recognition but are very talented yet sidelined at all times" said Muholi. 

The exhibition features commissioned artworks from Mpilo Makhanya , Bongani Luthuli , Lindokuhle Khumalo , Mlamuli Mkhwanazi , Mthobisi Maphumulo, Mduduzi Dzanibe , Londiwe Mtshali , Andile Maphumulo, Sthenjwa Luthuli, Lungisani Ndlovu, Nomusa Mtshali , Morgan Mohape , Sphephelo Mnguni, Ncumisa Mcitwa , Major Ndlovu, Mondli Mbhele, Zwelinjani Radebe, Shabo Bhengu, Mhlonishwa Chiliza, Khulekani Mkhize, Lindani Nyandeni, Nhlakanipho Gcwabe, Thembi Mtshali, Thalente Khomo, Wonder Mbambo and Nkosikhona Majola.

The exhibition is open daily at The KZNSA Gallery is situated at 166 Bulwer Road, Glenwood, in Durban and will run until the 2nd of June 2019.
