The 20th anniversary of the BET Awards hosted by comedian & actress Amanda Seales broadcast virtually this year because of Covid-19, but the host described it as "outside it's all Covid cops" saw Africans such as Nigeria's Burna Boy, South African's Nomzamo Mbatha and Zimbabean's Sha Sha makes headlines at this years event. The 20th anniversary of the BET Awards and the 40th anniversary of the BET TV channel ran under the theme of "Our Culture Can't be Cancelled" in the wake of civil unrest in the United States because of the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police.
Burna Boy won the Best International Act Award for the second time at 2020's BET Awards that was broadcast on BET channel 129 on DStv on Monday morning, Amapiano vocalist Sha Sha made history as the first Zimbabwean to win the Viewers' Choice Best New International Act Award. Nomzamo Mbatha also presented at this years BET Awards ceremony who broke the internet with her little black number by @cavanaghbaker styled by @mrrenriquemelendez
A number of performers and stars appeared which some addressed the killings of black men and women while in police custody, the Black Lives Matter movement and the protests over police violence, referenced the coronavirus pandemic, included Alicia Keys, Chloe x Halle, DaBaby, D Smoke, Kane Brown, Lil Wayne, Megan Thee Stallion, Roddy Ricch, SiR, Summer Walker, Usher & Wayne Brady. Beyoncé was honoured with the Humanitarian Award for her years of philanthropic service which she dedicated to the Black Lives Matter protestors.
