Gavin Rajah unvails summer beauty collection with Pick n Pay



Gavin Rajah embarks on a collection of quintessential beauty basics for Summer 2022 with Pick n Pay. 

Pick n Pay Clothing is increasingly investing in local clothing manufacturers and nearly 40% of its clothing is now locally produced, up from 10% at the start of the pandemic. In a bid to expand their offering and creating accessibility for their customer they are launching a curated collection of beauty basics designed by South African stalwart, Gavin Rajah.


Unique to its proudly made in South Africa range of quality wardrobe essentials is its collaboration with innovative local creators to curate collections of on-trend pieces, this latest collection follows on this premise. The collection includes some swimwear pieces, scented candles, lipsticks, lip glosses, eyeshadows, highlighters and nail varnishes, the perfect accessories for Summer.





Hazel Pillay, General Manager for Pick n Pay Clothing, says the, “The collection is a natural progression in our attempt to work with local talent in creating a fashionable and accessible collection for our shoppers.”

Rajah – known for his handcrafted exclusive garments – has also designed collections for PnP customers as part of this initiative. 


Later this month he will launch his fourth exclusive resort inspired collection in stores and online. Pillay says their customers were very excited for the opportunity to buy items from a well-known designer from

Rajah says he is enjoying these collabs. “People have reacted so well to the last collections and the launch of the collections have been perfectly poised to bring lots of joy to consumers looking for excellent value for money. It seems like a natural extension that we have created a beauty collection. 


The capsule beauty range will provide the perfect accompaniment customers’ wardrobes for the summer season at affordable price points,”Customers can expect to pay R49.99 for a hand cream to R139.99 for a scented candle to R89.99 for an eyeshadow palette. The range is available instore from the 7th of December 2022”

To secure a pipeline of talent and diversity for customers, the Futurewear project was launched which invites creators to apply to launch a collaboration with PnP Clothing. 


Through the project, emerging local designers are provided with mentorship in business by Rajah and practical application of skills in a commercial environment by Pick n Pay Clothing, each collection is produced locally, joining the increasing number of items made in South Africa. “Our increased local sourcing efforts lets us support more local suppliers and helps us ensure high levels of availability in stores and protecting us from some of the impact of global supply chain disruptions,” concludes Pillay.

ABOUT GAVIN RAJAH


Gavin Rajah is an entrepreneur in the world of fashion. The brand is synonymous with discerning style, and is a household name in Africa. Collaboration with micro-economic projects specialising in traditional skills and crafts are his passion and he is constantly seeking ways in which to promote this to the rest of the world and use this for economic upliftment. His work has been featured in international media such as L’Officiel, Milano Finanza, icon, Luna, Avant Garde, Harper’s & Queen, Uomo Collezioni, London Sunday Times, London Financial Times, The Face, Donna, Citizen K, BBC, CNN, Vogue (Italy) and the Los Angeles Times. His interests range from socio-political theory to esoteric psychology. He has designed jewellery collections for The Tanzanite Foundation, De Beers and AngloGold Ashanti right down to interiors for BMW motorcars. He has sat on the judging panel for numerous awards and design, most notably for AngloGold Ashanti and De Beers.


He was invited by the Federation Française de la Couture to show in Paris in July 2006, which was a first for Africa.

Gavin is strong on mentorship and in 2007 chose to mentor 4 South African designers (David Tlale, Craig Jacobs, Thula Sindi & Thabani Mavundla) and raised over R4 million rand to take them to Paris to showcase their work. This was a turning point in the landscape of South African fashion for it was the first time that black designers gained recognition by local and international media. These designers are now household brands in the country. He continues to work with young designers in helping them start their careers in fashion by taking them to mentor and train in his studio in Cape Town. He founded the first black owned fashion weeks in the country (Durban Fashion Week and Cape Town Fashion Week).


He has conceptualised and initiated POSI+IVE for Sun International, the largest Pan African collaboration of art, fashion and music; an event which aims at raising money for HIV/AIDS causes. This event has attracted the support of artists such as Seal, John Legend and Kelly Rowland to name a few. The United Nations has appointed him a UNICEF Ambassador for the work he has done to uplift the lives of vulnerable communities in South Africa and with this appointment he joins the ranks of Roger Federer, Shakira, Ricky Martin and Angelique Kidjo in working for children’s causes. He is also an ambassador for The Gift of the Givers.

 

FinWeek has listed him as one of the top 40 most influential leaders in the country. Gavin is also the recipient of the Designer of the Year Award for 2009. Gavin was named by Vogue (Italia) in Jan 2013 as one of 130 designers to watch around the world.

Gavin sits on the advisory board for Africa for Harvard University as well as the Harvard Art Initiative at the Centre for African Studies at Harvard. He co-founded the Futurewear project in association with Pick n Pay in 2018 which is an incubator for emerging talent in South Africa. This is a ground-breaking initiative and has lead to the creation of great talent in the country through an immersive programme of practical application of skills in a commercial environment.
